Track Bikes; Your Racing Choice

Track bikes are different from road bikes because they have only one fixed gear ratio. The track that these bikes race on has a very smooth surface and that eliminates the need for shock absorbers.

The tires are much narrower than other tires used for road bikes or racing bikes. These tires can be inflated using far more pressure than most tires. Because they are tubular and quite lightweight there is not a fear of puncture.

Track bikes can be used on public roadways, however to do so a brake must be added. This is a traffic law in virtually all countries. The use of at least a front brake is required. The frames of a track bike is firm and stiff for sprint racing. General racing frames are made to be aerodynamic.

The International Cycling Union is responsible for setting the limits on the design required for track bikes. The aerodynamic shape, size of the frame and tubes are all governed by this union.

The frame measurements of track bikes are different from road bikes. A onmiun frame is used for track racing. The difference between track bikes and road racing bikes for one is the bottom bracket is higher to allow more crank arm clearance when taking corners. Another difference is that a steeper seat tube which allows for the rider to sit forward and provides a more aerodynamic position.

Steering which responds better is provided for by using a steeper head tube. This tube is also lower than the seat which makes the aerodynamics better. Design makes them more stable at higher speeds. The track ends for the hub are backward facing instead of vertical which makes adjusting the tension of the chain easier.

The frame is generally made of either steel, aluminum or titanium. Carbon fiber is used more often on professional track bikes. Carbon fiber frames are higher in price than steel so steel is the material of choice for most road and other non-track bikes.

Track bikes have a fixed gear and the gear ratio is chosen depending on the preferences of the buyer. The gear determines whether the acceleration is quicker or the burst of speed at a given time is more important. A big gear means you will have higher top end speed. This is very important in scratch races.

When there are a lot of racers starting at the same time, without a good jump at the beginning, a racer may find themselves behind everyone else. Without this jump the chances of catching up and using a burst of speed at the end may not be possible. To be able to get a good jump and high end speed, the cyclist must be well trained on how to maintain the speed they need on these bikes to stay in the race.

The chain also plays an important part in the track bike. The wider chain is normally used. The wider chain is normally used. All aspects of the bike plays a part in the speed and handling of a track bike.

Track racing became quite popular in the 1930s when Madison Square Garden was the site for six day races. That is why you will often hear this type of racing called Madison.
