Road Bikes for All Purposes

Bicycles that are used on paved roads instead of trails and gravel or dirt roads are called road bikes. Normally when you think of a road bike you picture a typical bike. A bike for getting around, shopping, or just a ride on a nice day is the picture one gets when the term road bike is used. However this can mean racing bikes, touring bikes, or utility bikes.

The racing bike is a lightweight bike for maximum speed. The handlebars are lower than the seat so that the rider is positioned aerodynamically. This is extremely important in racing because the wind generated by the rider and bike can affect how fast the bike is going.

The front and back wheels on a racing bike are closer together than on a normal bike. They are made this way to provide quicker handling. A derailleur gear is used on racing bikes. The derailleur gear has a chain and sprockets. The benefit of using this are the gear ratios that it provides. The lower ones can make pedaling up a hill easier. The higher ones make pedaling on flat roads faster.

This is similar to the systems used on motorcycles. The derailleur gears are operated by a Bowden cable that can be found on the handlebars. This enables the rider to shift while pedaling. The speed difference in using this system can make the rider either the winner or loser of a race.

Another bike referred to as a road bike is the touring bike. This type of bike is more comfortable for sitting for longer periods of time. They are stronger and are made to carry heavy loads. This is great in case you run into a bargain you just can not pass up. These bikes are made to handle loads either on the front of the bike frame or the rear.

Generally they have a longer wheel base and the wheels are more conducive to carrying a lot of weight. This means they are wider than regular bike tires and the frame of the bike has to be made accordingly to accommodate the wheels. Mounts for carrying multiple water bottles are included on the bike frame. The older use of 27” tires has been replaced by 26” for the touring bicycle.

The touring bike usually have derailleur gears, one of which is very low. This gear is one you have probably heard referred to as a granny gear. This is the gear used for pulling steep hills especially when the bike is carrying a load.

The next in the line of road bikes is the utility bike. These are used for going back and forth to work, running around the city shopping, and often for running out to pay your bills. In large cities offices may used them to transfer paperwork from one office to one in another part of the city. The courier service has been used for years. Bikes are much easier for people to get around on and do not have the tendency of getting stuck in traffic.

The rims and wheels are made stronger than traditional bike parts so the maintenance will be low and they will last longer. The basis for a utility bike is for durability, comfort, and being functional. Often these bikes have baskets for carrying whatever is being transferred. In Germany a lot of these bikes are used for delivering mail.

Road bikes serve many purposes and are much more practical and cheaper to used than vehicles. The other good side to using these bikes is the exercise one gets.
