Hybrid Bikes - A Combination Bike
Hybrid bikes are used on roads and bike paths. The road and mountain bikes have influenced the design of the hybrid bike. It depends on the manufacturer which type they decide to model their bike after. This bike is a basically new type of bike. The one thing that manufacturers of this bike have tried to do is to model them after mountain bikes.
The reasoning behind this is mountain bikes are popular and urban use of these bikes is quite high. The gears used for hybrids are the same as mountain bike gears. Riding in areas where there are hills and mountains are one reason for using mountain bike gears.
The handlebars resemble neither the road bike nor the mountain bike. They are slightly upturned and this makes the seating position more upright.
A road biased hybrid bike is one that has a frame that is quite similar to the racing bike or the touring bike. Wheels with tires that are slick or semi-slick with a good width make the hybrid more able to have good grip on rough surfaces. This is more apt to be found on bike trails that are made of gravel. Sand that is hard packed and muddy are also easier to traverse using this type of tire.
Mountain biased hybrids are basically a mountain frame that has been modified. A taller head tube is one of the attributes that influence the riding position. The mountain hybrid normally uses 26 inch wheels with semi-slick tires. Usually these are just a little less than two inches wide.
If you are in the market for a comfort hybrid bike, this is a subclass of the hybrid bike. The standard manufacturers used for classifying a bike as hybrid is if they have 700C size wheels. Comfort is defined as having 26 inch wheels. The manufacturer’s state the difference for hybrid bikes more by what is sold than by specification. Front end suspension is one feature that is included in hybrid and comfort bikes.
Forks, seat post position, and stems that are angle adjustable are another feature that is standard on both the hybrid and comfort bike. One of the differences is using hub gears rather than derailleur gears.
If you like to ride on smooth surfaces and you do not plan on racing a hybrid bike is probably going to suit you just fine. The lightweight aspect is great for taking up and down stairs if you live in an apartment or for transporting from one place to another. If you are a part time rider and are not a serious everyday rider, this can provide a ride that you will enjoy.
Because the hybrid is basically a combination of a mountain bike and a road bike it has the good aspects of both. The brakes are sensitive however this means stopping is easier and skidding is not a problem.
