Folding Bikes - The Fold and Carry With You Bike

A bicycle that folds? Have you ever heard of these types of bikes? The folding bike is a type that has hinges and joints. They are locked when folded to keep the bike from opening unexpectedly. The frame is the part that is folded to minimize the space the bike takes.

While the United Kingdom and East Asia are the countries more popular for using these bikes, the United States has a few of them. One great thing about these types of bikes is that they can be folded up if you want to take the bus home. The folder, as some people call the folding bike, is able to go where a regular bike would not be welcome.

This eliminates the need for chaining your bike on the sidewalk and cuts down on the risk of theft. If you need to transport your bike by car, folding them down and sliding them in the trunk is far easier than having to strap them on the outside.

Some bikes that are taken apart in two sections for storage or transporting are also called folding bikes. These bikes are typically more expensive than a regular bike. However is convenience is what you are after, the folding bike provides just that.

Most of these types of bikes are used for commuting purposes. This results in the bikes being made more for comfort and durability rather than speed. The wheels on these bikes are smaller in diameter. Everything else is basically the same. Some do have a shorter wheel base, however this makes them ride rougher than a normal folder.

Normally narrow tires are not used on these types of bike because this also makes for a rougher ride. Suspension systems are often used for a more comfortable ride. Because these bike either fold or are taken apart in the middle of the frame, this can cause the frame to be weaker.

Folding bikes have more parts than their counterpart, due to being able to fold and lock them. In turn, this makes the bike more complicated and everyone knows more parts can mean more that something can go wrong with.

There are more adjustments on a folding bike for the height and size of the rider. The frames are made in one size generally and therefore the seats and handlebars need to be adjustable. Some of these have seats and handlebars that can extend four times higher.

Normally folding bikes have a smaller frame than a regular bike. However the wheelbase of folding frame bikes is quite similar to a conventional bike. The 26” wheels are the ones that most every manufacturer uses for these bikes.

The way these bikes fold generally depends upon who manufactured the bike. Most of them have latches and releases for quick folding and unfolding. In 2007 a cable activated folding bike was made available to the public.

The way a bike folds will determine how much it costs, the size of the wheels, and how small they can be folded. Models of these bikes that fold to a smaller size usually have 16 or 20 inch wheels. This may not be suitable for all body types.

Step through frames make for more convenient mounting and dismounting. This also is taken into consideration from the rider’s standpoint. The size and physical condition of a rider will determine which type is best for them.
